Ability to structure an argument Ability to use evidence Usage of written English Ability to provide an insight into your perspective of the text It is imperative that you keep these aims in mind at all times when you are writing your essay. Matrix students are taught how to address these criteria in their responses. You must ensure that you demonstrate a skilful ability to answer each of the seven criteria above. This is especially true in the HSC, where the questions are becoming more focused and thematically specific to weed out students who engage in this practice.
It is short and sweet, containing three strategies for success that include: Do more than what is required When people come to see me for tuition, it is generally for one of two reasons. They want to know how to get those few extra marks that will take them from a Band 5 to a Band 6 and want some tips and tricks on how to get there.
Both reasons for seeking out tuition are valid but the reason I raise them is because they show me that these students are the ones who are willing to do more to get what they want. If you are only willing to put in the minimum effort, how can you expect the maximum rewards? Food for thought…… 2.
That is, after all, what English is all about, learning how to be critical of ideas and contributing to the body of knowledge on a topic.
Be interesting Now, this is an area that a lot of students hate…. It is quite ridiculous when you think about it and yet it is part of the curriculum and must be mastered. So what does it take to be interesting?
Firstly, it is not necessarily about having a completely unique idea that no one else has thought of.
In this day and age, how can that possibly be achieved by every student sitting the exams? Even Hollywood is running out of ideas and has started re-making the movies of my generation for yours! So, how do you make your creative work interesting for your marker?
One way to do it is to borrow from the authors that exist. Take the start of their story and change it up in a significant and interesting way — play around with gender roles, change the setting in a dramatic way, alter the treatment of key themes or ideas turn positives to negatives, glorifying to demonising, etc.
For essay writing — look at the question from another angle. Sure, you could discuss how the discovery of a new place will lead an individual to ultimately change their perception of themselves — but take it further than that. That will take your analysis to a new place that your markers may not have considered themselves, let alone other students, instantly making your work more appealing to your audience.
